What I Do
I’m a full-time Remote Camp Cook and Medic at Esker Camp in the Ring of Fire.
My Typical Day
I’m up at 5am to make everyone breakfast. When that’s done, I do some baking and prepare lunch. Before you know it, it’s lunch time!
Between meals, I check the first aid room and email.
I also keep track of our inventory, clean, stock and organize food for the next day’s menu plan.
On my breaks, I go on the treadmill or take a nature walk (never too far). I also play pool and cribbage.
Then I start on supper.
When that is done, I get ready for bed so I can get up and do it all over again!
You work at a remote camp (fly in/fly out). What do you like about that?
My favourite part is the environment. It makes me feel at home and keeps my mind at peace. I love the people I work with and the new faces I meet. The energy is always positive. Laughter all around. I have the support of my co-workers. And we all get along. It makes you feel good to come back too after two weeks off!
What do you do on your days off?
I do a two weeks on/two weeks off rotation and usually spend time off with family, especially my nieces and nephews. We go for walks, take them to parks, go to movies, or plan weekend trips and just spend quality time together, to be their friend and their confidant. It’s good for them to share with others, beside their parents, in case they need that person in the long run. I also go on road trips sometimes, just to get away from everything.
What made you choose this as your career?
It’s funny because I applied for camp support worker first and thought cooking was part of that. I had done cooking in other places, but was always a second person in the kitchen. I find cooking puts me at ease, so when I saw there was an opening at Noront, I jumped on it and got in.
In the kitchen, everyday is a learning process because you have get to know people’s likes and dislikes. We cannot please everyone, but we sure do our best.
What is something you always bring with you to work?
I always bring a positive attitude and a smile, oh and extra clothing. Always 🙂
